Sacred Harp singing, also referred to as \u201cshape note singing\u201d is a community singing where the participants sing for the joy of singing. We sing from The Sacred Harp<\/em>, a shape note hymnal that has been in continuous publication since 1844. Originally rooted in the American South, The Sacred Harp<\/em> tradition has spread across the country and around the world.

We use shaped notes on the printed page to help us sight sing these hymns, vocalizing the shapes first, and then following with the hymn texts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We split the room into four sections, called the hollow square, featuring tenors altos, basses, and trebles, each of which may have male and female voices (except the alto section is all female).The hymn melody resides in the tenor section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In mid-Michigan, we gather on the<\/strong> first and third Mondays of each month, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, at<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
