In mid-Michigan, we gather on the<\/strong> first and third Mondays of each month, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, at Edgewood United Church, 469 N. Hagadorn, East Lansing, MI.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sacred Harp singing, also referred to as \u201cshape note singing\u201d is a community singing where the participants sing for the joy of singing. We sing from The Sacred Harp<\/em>, a shape note hymnal that has been in continuous publication since 1844. Originally rooted in the American South, The Sacred Harp<\/em> tradition has spread across the country and around the world.

We use shaped notes on the printed page to help us sight-sing these hymns, singing the note shapes first and following with the hymn text, helping us to instinctually find the intervals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We split the room into four sections, which is referred to as the hollow square<\/strong>, one side each for tenors, altos, basses, and trebles, comprised of both male and female voices (excepting the alto section, which is all female). The melody is carried by the tenor section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
